Fans at Slipknot’s Albuquerque, New Mexico show were very surprised to see an unmasked Corey Taylor take the stage during the band’s performance last night. This is the first time in the band’s history that Taylor [or any other Slipknot member] has performed without a mask — but this wasn’t about making history, instead, Taylor was forced to take the stage without a mask for a very unsettling reason.
The Albuquerque Times reported that authorities were seen backstage investigating the theft of Taylor’s signature Slipknot mask. Reportedly, while Corey Taylor was eating a ham and cheese sandwich in a room with his mask just out of reach, a man ran up and took the mask and shouted “catch me if you can ya’ son of a bitch!”
Taylor gave chase but was unable to catch the man. A source claims that Corey initially seemed to believe it was all a joke, so he finished half of his ham and cheese sandwich before chasing the thief. We now know that this was merely because Taylor has an affinity for ham and cheese sandwiches.
A chaotic scene unfolded backstage leading up to the moments just before the show. Our sources say that it wasn’t clear whether the band would perform until about 10 minutes before they were scheduled to go on. The band’s staff made every effort to attempt to get Taylor a replacement mask, but they were unable to in time. The local ‘Spencer’s Gifts’ was closed due to maintenance.
When the Slipknot frontman took the stage, he was greeted by a sea of shocked fans who immediately began taking photos of the historic moment. Fans were even more surprised when Taylor began singing his other band’s hit single “Through Glass”, seeming to forget that he wasn’t on stage with Stone Sour.
Ultimately, the show went off without any major hiccups — although authorities are still attempting to locate the mask thief. Missing signs have been posted throughout the city of Albuquerque in hopes of locating the mask and having it safely returned. Authorities announced a reward of “a high five from Corey Taylor” if the mask is found.
